PlasmaSurf 2016: yet another successful edition

PlasmaSurf is a summer school on plasma physics, whose name is inspired by a wave transferring energy to an electric charge. This brings up the perfect scenario for a demonstration on Portugal's largest laboratory: the ocean, where the participants have a chance to apply these principles through actual surfing!

Organized by Instituto de Plasmas e Fusão Nuclear (IPFN) and sponsored by Fusenet, and already in its 4th edition, PlasmaSurf brings together a summer school by the sea with plenty of outdoor activities and a range of cutting edge topics in plasma physics and related fields, presented by leading faculty members and researchers.

The 35 participants were welcomed on July 10 at Catalazete Youth Hostel, Oeiras. The group included students from 18 different countries and backgrounds, providing a dynamic and interesting atmosphere.

The contents lectured by IPFN members and special guests included topics such as computational physics, space plasmas, lasers and laser-plasma interactions, plasmas in nanotechnologies, ITER and JET projects, and others. Besides the lectures, Plasmasurf included visits to the IPFN facilities. Naturally the outdoor activities were a source of great excitement and team building, and this year included kayaking, climbing and mountain boarding.
